Captain Waddell was the perfect instructor/evaluator. He was calm and patient, always leading me towards the necessary knowledge with a supportive and positive demeanor. We had the opportunity to sail some very heavy air, and the experience was both exciting and informative. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Captain Waddell to anyone interested in the joys and complexities of sailing. Bravo!

Captain Jim did a fantastic job. He has an exceptional depth of knowledge and the judgement to emphasize the most important elements. He is also friendly and tells great, relevant stories. The SLC on-the-water assessment was thorough and reasonable.

Working with Jim was a great experience. In no particular order: - His boat is in pristine condition and is an advertisement for the Hunter Marlow 33, and he clearly takes excellent care of her. Most of my training has been done on a communal boat at a sailing school, and even though the boats there are well cared-for, it was instructive to see the next level that this could be taken to by a fastidious boat owner. His briefing on his own boat, and recap of how to examine a charter boat and prepare for sailing, was a highlight of the evaluation for me. - His evaluation was clear and fair. - His instruction when it was given was easy to understand and practical; no surprises here given that he spent much of his career as an educator. - I enjoyed spending several hours with him in Salem Sound; in addition to being a high-quality instructor and evaluator, he is also just great company.
