Greg Kupiec

Private Instructor - Phoenix, AZ, USA
I've been sailing since 2006. In 2015 I became a member of Fairwind Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey, California. The 2 port, 34 boat co-op gave me access to a large variety of boats and training where I quickly became an Instructor Certified to start teaching and training within the club – always with the goal of getting as much time on the water as possible. My specialty became the club's only Catamaran where I worked with just 4 other instructors to train and check club member out for competency. I've circumnavigated California's Channel Islands. My longest trip was moving one of Sea Shepherd's only sailboat (the 89ft "Martin Sheen" Ketch) from Marina Del Rey, California to Vancouver British Columbia. I am fluent in English and French and speak some Portuguese and Spanish.

Jeff 'Vegas' Howard

Private Instructor - Dana Point, CA, USA

Passionate sailor and experienced instructor at your service! I discovered the thrill of sailing at 14, at Boy Scout camp. Mastering Small Boat Sailing, I returned the next summer to teach sailing, and I acquired my first boat, a used El Toro, from that camp, and a few years later a Hobie 16. Many years later, I bought my first boat with a cabin below; a 28' Columbia. I embraced the journey, learning through experiences like my first multi-day open-ocean trip in that boat from Long Beach to San Diego. After a couple of years, I purchased a very fast 24’ Seawind Catamaran. I delivered it to San Diego from Newport Beach before realizing my true passion lies in the joy of cruising, not racing. This insight led me to a 42' Hunter and eventually a 46' Hunter. Sailing vessels are my love, and I enjoy sharing that love with others. I promise to treat each vessel and student with the utmost care and love. Let my passion elevate your sailing experience.

Growing up in the Midwest with a father who served as a Navy mechanic, it was only natural we had speed boats. After maintaining those whiles leaning basic mechanical skills, I went on to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree from Purdue University.  As marriage, my daughter April, and career & education, earning an MBA, took more of my time, by boating passion took a back seat. Only after my daughter while attending college in SD suggested we rent a sailboat in San Diego Harbor was my passion re-lived.   After an afternoon of fun but limited skillful sailing, I started my training.  I'm now a NauticEd Captain, Level V, International Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) and the US Coast Guard Marchant Mariner Credential, OUPV followed. Today my goal of bareboat chartering is being meet, a week in the America Virgin Islands, a 21-day voyage from Tortola to Grenada, Croatia, with a flotilla to the BVI rounds up the current trips. Boating is fun but boating is not without risks.

Jack Clayton

Private Instructor - Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA

I was introduced to sailing by a grizzled old shipwright in the icy fjords of Norway on a wooden sloop he had built. Whetting a lifelong desire for a life under canvas and rigging. Several misadventures and sometime later I ended up in the Caribbean with a bunch of derelict engine-less sailboats of various designs and origins, which somehow seemed like a great idea to acquire at the time. I learned to rebuild them with primitive materials and tools, taking lessons from the innovative locals, old salts taking refuge in the hurricane hole I was posted up in, and drawing on my past experiences. It was there on these boats I began teaching sailing to volunteers that joined me on my sailing adventures and hosting a reoccurring educational sailing festival whilst also dabbling in the charter business realm. In December 2017 I decided to sail my boat solo from Guatemala to Key West. I look forward to teaching you the "ropes" in Fort Lauderdale, South Florida, and beyond!

Captain J's father was a lobster fisherman. Even while fulfilling his mother's ambitions, that he become an architect, Captain J always kept a toe in the water. As the years passed Captain J's foot kept getting wetter. After finding a like-minded First Mate, Captain J sold the house, and moved to a sailboat, where the couple raised two children while island hopping the Caribbean. At the children's request "we want to be normal", we returned to civilization (a misnomer).

Joshua Rundle

Private Instructor - Annapolis, MD, USA
In 2015, I sailed for the first time about a 38ft cruising catamaran as crew in the British Virgin Islands. I later took the US Sailing Basic Keelboat course on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. I became heavily involved in amateur racing on small boats and cruising on monohulls and catamarans up to 45ft. In 2022 the Marine Corps moved me to the DC Metro area for service at the Pentagon. That summer, I became an instructor with DC Sail, where I coached US Sailing Smallboat on Flying Scots and racing Flying Juniors. In summer 2024, I started coaching Basic Keelboat at JWorld in Annapolis, MD. Later in 2024, I signed on with NauticEd as an instructor. As a Marine, I learned to love the joy of teaching and training others. Coaching allows me to combine the joy of teaching others with my passion for sailing. I love watching new students learn to operate a sailboat safely and effectively while they pursue their interest or dream of sailing.

Valerio Marra

Since I started sailing, my mission has been to demystify sailboat design: understanding how they work, how their design affects their function, and how to sail them faster. I love teaching performance sailing to intermediate/advanced sailors who still wonder, "How does that control line do what it does?" My goal is sailing well, with speed, balance, and safety. I designed and delivered "The Physics of Yacht Design" seminar series, covering the most important aspects of yacht design at an accessible level. It requires only high-school math and physics knowledge, yet it is detailed enough to interest both beginner and experienced sailors. My favorite sailboat is the J/80, and I volunteer as a skipper for adaptive sailing programs whenever possible. I hold a PhD in fluid machines and energy systems engineering, as well as an MSc in nuclear engineering, specializing in numerical methods for computational fluid dynamics.

I want to share my love of sailing. My first mate (my wife) and I fell in love with sailing after seeing a family enjoy a Hobie Cat at the beach almost 20 years ago. After that we began learning on increasing size boats over the years (including that very Hobie Cat) and now teach on our Ericson 32. I find that sailing is different things for people. For my wife it is the peace and calm of the open air and water. I feel the same but also the mental engagement needed to always be evaluating the wind and course. Come join us and find your passion for sailing!

I grew up on a small estuary in South Carolina. I began kayaking at the age of 4, first Jon boat at 6, and continued up to a 30ft offshore powerboat at 14. My love for the ocean compelled me to achieve a degree in Marine Biology (I'm the definition of a shark nut). After graduating I decided to move to the northwest to get a taste of the Pacific Ocean and got sucked into sailing - where I managed sailing schools and clubs in Seattle, Olympia, and Gig Harbor Washington. I love instructing - nothing compares to that little smirk everyone gets when we first heel over, and it just gets better from there!

Why work with me? I'm passionate about helping people master the skills needed to sail confidently. My approach is different from many sailing schools that rush students through a pre-formatted program. I’ve experienced those programs myself and left feeling unsure and unfulfilled. Together we’ll focus on hands-on training, building your sailing skills on the water—not just memorizing test answers. Sailing is a lifelong adventure, and it would be my honor to support you in achieving your dream of sailing.

The more I sail the more I love it! There is nothing quite like getting the sails up, turning the engine off, and experiencing the pure joy of feeling the sun on your face, the wind in your sails and the water all around you. I've been sailing for 20 years and have been a boat-owning skipper for the last 15. As both an active racer and cruiser I am typically sailing at least 50 times per year, continuously developing my own skills, teaching and building race crew teams and actively supporting women in sailing. Feedback from my crews over the years is that as a skipper I am patient, easy to understand, explain things well, have an empathetic spirit and am inspirational as well as empowering. My foray into formal Sailing Instruction is a natural evolution combining my passion for the sport with my honed leadership and coaching skills accrued through my professional career. I can't wait to get you out on the water! https://sailingstrong.com/
