What is an instructional yacht charter?

An instructional yacht charter is a private charter vacation with a qualified instructor aboard who helps you learn how chartering actually works while you do it.

With NauticEd Go Now, you take part in things such as planning the day, navigating, handling the yacht, anchoring or mooring, managing onboard systems, and making the decisions that come up during a charter week.

You still have a professional aboard, but you’re not simply handing the boat over to a captain.

How is Go Now different from a normal captained or skippered yacht charter?

On a typical captained charter, the captain takes responsibility for running the yacht while you focus on the vacation.

On a Go Now Instructional Charter, a qualified NauticEd Instructional Captain is still aboard, but you take a much more active role. The captain explains what is happening, gets you involved, and helps you build practical charter experience along the way.

If your goal is eventually to bareboat charter on your own, that distinction matters.

Is Go Now a sailing school or liveaboard sailing course?

No. Go Now starts with the private yacht charter vacation, not a fixed school syllabus.

The learning comes from what the charter actually requires: navigation, boat handling, anchoring or mooring, yacht systems, dinghy operations, provisioning, itinerary planning, and the everyday decisions involved in running the yacht.

For someone looking specifically for intensive fundamentals training or a certification course, a NauticEd school or instructor closer to home may be a better starting point.

Is Go Now a private charter, or will other students be aboard?

It is your private charter.

You book the yacht for your own group, so you can bring your spouse, partner, children, family, or friends. You are not placed aboard with unrelated students.

That is a big part of the Go Now idea: one person can be highly involved in learning while everyone else still gets the yacht vacation they came for.

Does everyone in my group have to participate in the instruction?

No.

Some people want to be involved in nearly every maneuver and decision. Others would rather swim, relax, explore ashore, or join in only when something interests them.

Your Instructional Captain works around your group rather than turning the vacation into a compulsory class.

How much of the week is instruction?

As much as makes sense for your goals.

Some guests want a relaxed introduction to chartering. Others want to spend much of the week actively planning, navigating, handling the yacht, anchoring, mooring, and working through systems.

There is no fixed number of classroom or instructional hours. Most of the learning happens as part of the charter itself.

Am I expected to skipper the yacht myself during Go Now?

No. You do not need to arrive ready to run the yacht on your own.

A qualified NauticEd Instructional Captain is aboard. You can take the helm and participate in planning, navigation, yacht handling, anchoring, mooring, systems, and other parts of the charter at a level that fits your experience, goals, the conditions, and the captain’s judgment.

That is one of the important differences between Go Now and taking a bareboat charter yourself.

Do I need sailing or boating experience before taking a Go Now charter?

No previous experience is required simply to participate with a qualified Instructional Captain aboard.

If you are new, Go Now can introduce you to how yacht chartering works. If you already sail or powerboat, the week can focus more on the parts of chartering that may still be unfamiliar: larger yachts, new cruising grounds, yacht systems, anchoring, provisioning, dinghy operations, or managing a boat for an entire week.

Is Go Now only for beginners?

No.

Go Now can work for first-time boaters, experienced local sailors or powerboaters, previously certified boaters, and people who have already taken captained charters but want to become more involved.

The common thread is wanting to understand chartering better without having to take full responsibility for the yacht from day one, or to better prepare yourself for bareboat chartering on your own.

Where is NauticEd Go Now available?

Current Go Now destinations include our flagship British Virgin Islands program, La Paz and the Sea of Cortez, and Croatia.

They are intentionally different. The BVI is one of the most approachable places to gain charter experience. La Paz offers a more remote and adventurous Sea of Cortez experience. Croatia combines Mediterranean island cruising, historic towns, and charter routines such as stern-to mooring.

How do I choose the right Go Now destination?

Start with the kind of vacation and cruising experience you want.

Consider the cruising environment, travel, yacht options, activities ashore, your experience level, and what you want to learn. You do not need to figure it all out before contacting us.

Can I do Go Now on a sailboat, powerboat, monohull, or catamaran?

Options vary by destination and fleet availability.

Go Now can include sailing and power yachts, monohulls, and catamarans where they are available. Your boating background, group size, cabin needs, budget, and future charter goals can all affect which yacht makes the most sense.

Can Go Now help me learn to charter a catamaran?

Yes, where catamarans are available.

A charter catamaran may be much larger and more systems-heavy than the boats you normally use at home. Go Now gives you the opportunity to learn its handling, engines, maneuvering, systems, anchoring, and day-to-day routines with an experienced Instructional Captain aboard.

For many boaters, that experience is difficult to get locally before their first catamaran charter.

What is a bareboat yacht charter?

A bareboat charter is a yacht charter where you or another qualified person in your group serves as skipper rather than having a professional captain aboard to run the yacht.

That means taking responsibility for the yacht, crew, navigation, itinerary, systems, anchoring or mooring, and the day-to-day decisions that come with the charter.

Go Now gives you a way to experience those responsibilities with an Instructional Captain still aboard before taking them all on yourself.

What will I actually learn on a Go Now Instructional Charter?

It depends on your background, yacht, destination, and goals, but you may work on:

• itinerary and passage planning;
• navigation in unfamiliar waters;
• yacht handling and maneuvering;
• anchoring and mooring;
• marina and charter-base procedures;
• dinghy operations;
• provisioning and preparing the yacht;
• onboard power, water, plumbing, and other systems;

Is Go Now the same thing as bareboat charter training?

Not exactly.

Go Now includes a great deal of practical charter learning, but it is intentionally built around a vacation rather than a fixed bareboat-training syllabus.

Core sailing or powerboating skills are often better developed through repeated local instruction and practice. Go Now adds something that can be difficult to reproduce at home: experience with a charter yacht, unfamiliar cruising grounds, yacht systems, provisioning, itinerary decisions, dinghy operations, and the day-to-day reality of a charter week.

Can someone become ready to bareboat charter in one week?

Not if they are starting with little or no experience.

A week can teach you a great deal, but charter readiness comes from a combination of knowledge, practical skill, judgment, and experience.

Go Now adds charter-specific experience and helps you identify what still needs work before you take responsibility for a yacht and crew.

What should I expect to come away with after Go Now?

Is Go Now a certification program?

No. Go Now is first and foremost an instructional yacht charter vacation.

Qualified participants may be able to work toward an assessment, NauticEd certification, or licensing during the charter, depending on their existing knowledge, skills, experience, and preparation.

Certification is never automatic just because you took the trip.

Do I need a bareboat certification before doing Go Now?

No.

Because a qualified Instructional Captain is aboard, you do not need to arrive ready to skipper the yacht yourself.

Go Now can be useful before certification, as part of figuring out what skills and experience you need, or after certification, when you want to apply what you learned in a charter environment.

I already have ASA 104 or US Sailing Bareboat Cruising. Is Go Now still useful?

Yes.

A bareboat certificate and actual charter experience are not the same thing.

You may already have solid sailing skills while having relatively little experience with charter-yacht systems, provisioning, dinghy operations, unfamiliar cruising grounds, repeated anchoring or mooring, managing a crew for a week, or making daily charter decisions.

For boaters with American Sailing (ASA) 104, US Sailing Bareboat Cruising, or another bareboat credential, Go Now can be a practical next step before taking full responsibility for a charter yacht.

What qualifications do I need to bareboat charter a yacht on my own?

There is no single qualification that covers every bareboat charter.

Requirements vary by charter company, destination, yacht, and local regulations. Charter operators may look at your boating resume and relevant experience and may also require particular certifications or licenses.

A bareboat certificate by itself does not guarantee that a charter company will approve you for a particular yacht or charter.

NauticEd’s approach is competence first: the knowledge, practical skills, relevant experience, and credentials needed for the charter you want to take.

Can I earn a NauticEd Bareboat certification during Go Now?

Possibly, if you already meet the appropriate knowledge, skill, and experience requirements and an assessment can be properly conducted during the charter.

For many guests, the better use of Go Now is to gain charter experience and identify remaining gaps rather than arriving with the expectation of leaving certified.

If certification is one of your goals, discuss it with NauticEd before the trip so we can determine what is realistic.

What is the SLC International License, and can Go Now help me qualify for one?

The SLC International Sailing License and Credentials is NauticEd’s international sailing credential for qualified sailors who need recognized documentation for chartering in destinations where formal credentials may be required.

A Go Now charter may contribute practical training or assessment for qualified sailors, but the SLC has its own knowledge, practical, and experience requirements.

If Mediterranean chartering is one of your goals, tell your NauticEd specialist early so your education, practical training, experience, and assessment can be planned appropriately.

Should I complete NauticEd courses before a Go Now charter?

You do not need coursework simply to take a Go Now vacation.

However, some preparation can make the week more useful. For sailors working toward independent chartering, the NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master course bundle provides useful charter-specific knowledge. Powerboaters have a corresponding Bareboat Charter Master pathway.

If you are brand new to sailing, foundational coursework and local on-water instruction may also make sense before or after the trip.

Your recommended path depends on where you are starting and what you ultimately want to do.

How long is a Go Now Instructional Charter?

Most Go Now trips follow the rhythm of a weeklong yacht charter, although exact boarding and disembarkation schedules can vary by destination and charter arrangement.

Your NauticEd Charter Specialist will confirm the actual schedule for the trip you are considering.

Does the Instructional Captain stay aboard with us?

Yes. Your Instructional Captain joins the charter and stays aboard with your group.

The yacht therefore needs suitable accommodation for the captain, which NauticEd takes into account when helping you choose the yacht and cabin layout.

Captain travel, meals, provisioning, and gratuity are also considered when the trip is planned. The actual arrangement and costs are explained before you book.

How much does a Go Now Instructional Charter cost, and what is included?

There is no single Go Now price because you are booking a private yacht charter rather than a fixed-price course.

Cost depends on the destination, yacht, travel dates, group and cabin requirements, Instructional Captain, and other trip details.

Your proposal will show the charter and instructional costs and what is included. Depending on the trip, separate expenses may include travel, transfers, provisioning, fuel, marina, mooring or park fees, activities, gratuity, and other normal charter expenses.

A NauticEd Charter Specialist can work through the options and give you the actual costs for the trip you are considering.

How far in advance should I book a Go Now charter?

Earlier is better, particularly if you have fixed dates or want a specific yacht.

A Go Now trip requires both a suitable charter yacht and a qualified Instructional Captain, so there are two availability pieces to coordinate.

You do not need to have every detail settled before contacting us. Starting the conversation early gives us more flexibility to put the right trip together.
