Our course, meticulously crafted by the expert duo of seasoned sailor Bill Ibsen and distinguished Psychologist Dr. Andy Ward, offers an unparalleled deep dive into the nuanced dynamics of leading a crew comprised of your nearest and dearest.

"I've led dozens and dozens of sailing ventures all over the world. Over the years I've grown to be a great skipper/leader learning from all the human mistakes and faux pas that I've made when dealing with friends and family aboard. Fortunately, those relationships were strong enough to deal with my then lack of knowledge of how to lead friends and family. I became very excited when Bill and Andy agreed to write this course. It is exactly what I needed back then, and I still learned a ton as I programmed this course into our eLearning platform. Take the course - your leadership skills will be transformed in amazing ways!"
- Grant Headifen, Global Director of Education for NauticEd.

A very intelligent and well-written course, but also very easy to read and digest. The high quality of such a 'soft skills' topic was a pleasant surprise! The subjects covered are very actionable and, quite frankly, should be a 'must read' for any skipper/captain, but most especially those entrusted with the safety and enjoyment of friends & family on a sailing get-away of *any* duration.

This is a good refresher on leader'"ship" and on developing a smooth, effective, and coherent team on board your yacht. There is nowhere to hide on a boat, so it is important to get this right.

Finally a sailing school also offering a soft-skills course not only to their instructors but also available for all of their students! For me as important as the hard skill courses when taking command of a vessel. Very good starting point course, giving lots of material to reflect on and in my opinion to revisit after a while.

Darth Vader
Star Wars’ nefarious character Darth Vader

What do Captain Ahab from Melville’s Moby Dick, Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, and Darth Vader from Star Wars have in common? For one, they are all low-EQ leaders. They embody a harsh, dictatorial, intimidating, demanding, critical, authoritarian, low-empathy leadership style. They often use fear to achieve compliance. They represent the ultimate Tyrant Captains.

“But these examples are all fictitious characters,” you may object. “What do they have to do with real life sailing?” You might argue that these characters are fictitious, but it's also true that they represent composite figures of the worst leadership traits imaginable. And, in each case, their leadership produced tragic or disastrous consequences for their followers. But if you look at each individual trait, you’ll find characteristics that mirror real life. You probably know people - or captains - who bear one or two of these characteristics when they are under pressure.

It's impressed me that although my sailing experience spans over 65 years, I always learn something new when going to your website. This is particularly true when using NED.
