Captain Thompson is an outstanding instructor. I've sailed with him 3 times now: for the RYA Day Skipper/ICC certifications in The Bahamas (passage to Fort Lauderdale), a passage from Annapolis to Bermuda, and a flotilla of 3 boats from BVI to Guadeloupe and back (during which I skippered one of the boats).
Mark is patient, knowledgeable, has great stories to tell, and makes awesome casseroles, too! I'm looking forward to sailing with him again.
I had an exceptionally excellent experience with Cpt. Mark Thompson. His extensive seamanship experience, ultimate command of vessel, situation, people management are coming across in all aspects. His leadership, communication and educational skills are truly remarkable. Looking forward to further opportunities down the line to sail with and learn from Mark.
Friendly, highly knowledgeable and competent instructor/examiner.
The ISC supplied test boat had some serious problems, specifically the transmission was hard to control and the cable came off during a docking maneuver so that the boat gained speed while in reverse (!), also the main sheet lines were so tangled and knotted that the boom would only go out in strong wind or with help. Mark did a great job of coping with this and turned it into learning opportunity.
Mark is extremely knowledgeable and offers a wealth of experience that he enthusiastically shares with students. His communications skills, great personality and relaxed demeanor make him someone who I look forward to sailing and training with in the near future.
Mark is not only an utmost professional, he is one of the most likeable guys you will meet. His teaching style is calm and collected and he never gets frustrated. Mark will ensure you learn the material and have fun doing it - whatever your sailing goals! I've learned more from Mark in one hour than any other sailor I've sailed with. There are no secrets with Mark's teaching style and you get exactly what he preaches. Cannot recommend Yachting Education enough. I've already been on three trips with him and it most definitely won't be my last! "If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there!" -Capt Ron
We can thoroughly recommend this course with Mark Thompson. We found the 5 day intensive course itinerary really worked for us – plenty of time to practice all the sailing skills such that we feel confident to take out or charter our own boat, but also to have the evenings to relax and feel a bit more like a “vacation”. Mark's choice of mooring points for lunch and overnight was great – very tranquil and relaxed most days, but also nice to have the option of the more busy marinas of Annapolis and St Michael’s on some evenings.
We really Mark's teaching style - mixing humor and patience, with enough intensity to get through the curriculum. (Not to mention the homemade frittata and enough cheesecake to please even the biggest sweet tooth!)
Overall it was a great confidence building, learning and fun experience.
Thanks, Nick, Lisa and Chris
I like sailing with Mark because he is personable and easy to get along with. His calm onboard sets a great stage to enjoy a trip and learn in the process. He made all of his instructions very clear and if I needed a little extra explanation he was happy to explain. I've learned a lot from Mark and am looking forward to learning more.
