Landfall Sailing was founded in 2005 as part of the Seraph Group on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas and is one of only a handful of schools in the U.S hosting the assessments for the internationally recognized SLC certification required for power and sail by many EU nations.
Many of us had our first boating experience on powerboats but became fascinated with sailing. Sailing offers a lifelong learning opportunity, is quiet and environmentally-friendly, technically challenging, not entirely fuel dependent therefore offers unlimited range, is cost effective and enables adventures associated with bareboat chartering in exciting destinations.
We are not solely focused on issuing stickers or certifications without also assuring that our students develop documented, tangible, verified, practical skills recognized by major charter companies worldwide. We tailor your classes to your schedule and limit our classes to 2 students

I recently booked a charter and learned that a special license was required for the Mediterranean. We recently spent two days with Bruce, brushing-up our skills and learning new things while being assessed for practical, on-the-water knowledge. Although I was the only one being tested for SLC competency, my wife and son to come along to get some crewing experience.
Bruce is a wonderful and thorough Instructor. He explained the material well, using practical demonstrations while making the process engaging and fun. Besides his wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge, one could see that he enjoys what he does. He is a generous being, and his fleet of sailboats is well equipped and in immaculate condition.
Bruce would be a great sailing instructor to anyone wanting to learn how to sail, looking to brush-up old tricks, or to learn new techniques. Knowing that we will be back for more sailing and learning from Bruce, I highly recommend him as a “one-of-a-kind” instructor!
Bruce is professional and passionate about his teaching responsibilities. He not only understands the theory side of the course materials but also ensures a strong application of practical tools are part of each students sailing toolkit.
Bruce is thorough and knowledgable, and constantly teaching. He was patient in addressing procedures that were new or not used often. He clearly communicated the process we were going through and provided valuable feedback along the way. He made the process enjoyable, but required a great deal of effort from me as we worked our way through -- as this licensing process should. I obtained my BBCM Level 5 and the SLC working with Bruce, and I would highly recommend working with him to anyone really wanting to learn all aspects of sailing.
Bruce was a thorough and detail instructor. He clearly explained the material and procedures. He made the whole experience pleasurable and i look forward to continuing my education with NauticEd and Bruce.
"To Young men (women) contemplating a voyage I say go- Joshua Slocum" An appropriate quote from a famous sailor. Go to Landfall sailing and spend a day on the water with Bruce, you won't be sorry. He is very knowledgeable and extremely focused on getting each individual the training and tools for your "Toolbox" to make sailing more pleasurable through knowledge and practice. I am a Maritime College graduate and spent years on ships at sea as well as holding a USCG Masters License. Bruce's in-depth discussion and knowledge added tools that will help in sailing my boat and on future charters around the world. Everyone can benefit and enjoy a day on the water with Bruce. Five Stars Plus!
It's easy to develop empathy with someone when you spend time on phone calls ahead and then a whole day on the water with him. However, my ratings were not based on that empathy. I considered each category prior to assigning a 5 star to it. I have 50 years of sailing as well as power boating experience. I teach boat handling. I needed this certification in order to professionally charter in the Mediterranean even though I maintain a 100 ton USCG Masters license in power, sail and tow. However, as self-confident as I felt about adding the SLC to my tool chest of credentials, Bruce still taught me a few things. And, even more importantly, he made me challenge some of my thinking which is not an easy thing for a proverbial "old salt". He's a conscientious professional instructor and a nice guy with whom to simply enjoy a sail. Good job!
I spent two wonderful days with Bruce on Lake Travis in February. His ability to convey his sailing knowledge, teach and assess the complex information contained in the SLC rubrics is exceptional. As any good instructor/examiner, Bruce made me feel at ease, and comfortable during the entire process. (One day “rust off,” one day assessment) I now feel ready and eager to take my chartering to the next level. Thank you Bruce.
Bruce was a very knowledgeable instructor and more importantly he was able to convey that knowledge in a way that was easy to understand and grasp. This was by first explaining the procedure and its concept, then demonstrating and finally having me, the student, perform the task. His attention to detail was unsurpassed. The condition of his vessel was excellent. The most important aspect of the experience, as least for me, was Bruce was able to tailor my instruction to meet my specific needs and goals. He also provided good information prior to my visit, to assure maximum preparedness. I would certainly recommend Bruce as an instructor to anyone interested in learning to sail and getting certified.
It's hard to sum up my experience with Bruce in a few short sentences. We are transiting the Atlantic on our catamaran next spring and I needed to complete the SLC to meet clearing-in requirements. I completed the required coursework and testing on Nauticed.org, and then proceeded to the practical assessment. The assessment was administered by Bruce. He added much more value than a typical assessor. Before, during and after the assessment, he was not just performing the assessing. He was interacting to gain a full understanding of my abilities, my boat and my sailing plans. After the assessment he provided an array of useful tips and opinions that will be invaluable on our journey. The assessment itself was rigorous and comprehensive. The detailed rubric left we with a clear understanding of my strengths and exposed weaknesses to me; things every serious sailor should know about him/her self. This was a pass/fail assessment. Even with a passing score, the rubric format identifies area
I keep “learning and confirming” with Bruce. Even when we are off the clock, his passion for excellence spills over into casual conversation and the student benefits from his experience and discipline. Thanks Bruce.
I could not ask for a more knowledgeable and professional instructor. From never stepping foot on a sailboat to currently being a Bareboat Charter Master, Bruce has helped me reach my goals that otherwise I would not have met without him.
I would recommend Bruce to anyone seeking training. Bruce not only tested me out for the Practical Competency portion of NauticEd’s Bareboat Charter Master rank, but also more than prepared me for the assessment for the ICC (United Nations Resolution 40 Global Sailing License). Despite all of my prior experience, I would not have passed the ICC assessment without Bruce’s patient and clear instructions.
Bruce was such a joy to be with for the very long "test" day out on the water. He was very accommodating with my requests for specific things I needed to be tested on, as well as following the check list by NauticEd. We were so lucky to have a gently wind with sunny skies! His boat was very clean and rigged to make it easy to sail solo. I look forward to getting back for my ICC!
Bruce's passion for sailing and excellence in nautical education are infectious He is one of the most motivated and motivating person I have ever met. He is an operational definition of what a sailing instructor should be.
Bruce was a one of the best sailing instructors I have ever had. He is a great communicator and knows how to properly "teach" sailing to students. I say that because I have had instruction for qualified sailors, but they did not have the "teaching skills" necessary to get important points across. Bruce has a very detail oriented nature so of course the boats were in "OCD" perfect condition which made the me feel very comfortable from a safety perspective. The entire NauticEd team was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I would highly recommend Bruce as a sailing instructor for beginning to advanced sailing. - Chris W.
I would recommend Bruce to anyone seeking training or certification. Bruce, is not just vastly experienced, he is patient and a great teacher able to give clear instructions and constructive advice when needed. He was able to intelligently respond to my every curiosity about sailing, boat maintenance and even the culture surrounding the sport. Bruce’s boat is absolutely immaculate, a further indication of his passion for sailing.
Sailing with Bruce was an incredible learning experience. He is so patient and made sure we spent more time on things I needed help with. Bruce worked around my schedule to make meeting up very easy. The work he did with my building and then polishing my maneuvering under power skills helped make me really competent and confident moving a large boat around in tight quarters. When I went to the BVI and took a class to earn my Catamaran Endorsement, my instructor there got very excited about my skills and told everyone else in the class to come watch how I maneuvered a 39ft catamaran to a dock. I was beaming with pride, and know that all the kudos go to Bruce for being a great teacher. I highly recommend choosing Bruce as a sailing instructor.
Bruce far exceeded my expectations as an instructer. It's clear that Bruce not only has a true passion for sailing, but also a love of sharing his knowledge with others. Bruce was patient and took the time to really explain things in an easy to understand manner. I never felt like I was "on the clock". In fact, Bruce went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable captaining my own boat. I would recommend Bruce to anyone just getting into sailing or looking to refresh their skills.
Landfall Sailing is great! They have amazing boats and Bruce the instructor is even better. He has you go through the online course material on you own and then covers it with you again on the boat. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone from beginners to even more experience sailors.

Bruce is an excellent instructor and all around good guy. Highly enjoyed my time with Landfall Sailing!
I got to sail with Bruce to help"knock off some of the rust" before a BVI Charter. He did a great job assessing where I was. We were able to focus on what needed attention. He did an excellent job! His passion for sailing is evident and boat is top notch. Highly recommend.
