Hi, my name is Gabriel Burgess and I grew up with a love of wind and water, chasing adventure in the Columbia River Gorge in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Today, I’m a USCG 100-ton Master & a FAA-certified Pilot and Flight Instructor with a background as an airline captain, adventure sports athlete, expedition leader, & training systems consultant. I’ve logged over 40,000 nm, crossed oceans under sail, explored remote coastlines, and now run multi-day expeditions aboard SV Indie Sky, a Lagoon 46 catamaran offering immersive, hands-on training expeditions around the world. These aren’t sightseeing cruises — they’re full-spectrum liveaboard experiences where we sail, train, adventure and grow together in dynamic, real-world conditions. My team and I invest heavily in the success of our students and crew. We care deeply about your journey and create expeditions that are designed to challenge and elevate you. You’ll leave a better sailor, and probably a better version of yourself.

Bermuda

This offshore passage departs St. George’s, Bermuda, bound for Ponta Delgada, Azores, covering one of the most iconic ocean routes in sailing: a true North Atlantic crossing aboard a bluewater catamaran. This is a fully immersive offshore expedition, structured for hands-on participation rather than passenger cruising. Crew members are involved in all aspects of passagemaking, including watchstanding, offshore navigation, weather routing, sail handling, safety procedures, and vessel systems management. A rotating watch schedule ensures continuous operation of the vessel while building real offshore experience. Leaving Bermuda, the passage heads east into the North Atlantic, where conditions transition from island trade wind sailing into true oceanic weather systems. The route typically crosses areas influenced by the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic lows, requiring active routing decisions and constant weather monitoring. Long-period swells, shifting winds, and extended night watches define the rhythm of life at sea. The passage demands teamwork, endurance, and disciplined seamanship. Days at sea take on a steady cadence—sleep, watch, navigation, sail adjustments, and meals underway—while the horizon remains uninterrupted in every direction. For many sailors, this route represents a major milestone: a genuine Atlantic crossing under sail. Landfall in the Azores is a defining moment, with volcanic peaks emerging after days or weeks of open ocean, marking arrival in one of the Atlantic’s most storied archipelagos. This expedition delivers meaningful offshore sea time, advanced passage experience, and the opportunity to complete a classic ocean route aboard a modern bluewater catamaran.

Practical Competence of Bareboat Charter Master Rank
Capt. Gabriel Burgess provided an incredible sailing experience with in-depth instruction & challenging hands-on practicals. I think he struck the right balance of creating an environment that was professional & focused on the skills & components needed to safely & successfully sail an offshore passage while also making it fun and engaging for the entire crew. I was grateful that he got us very involved in all of the tasks associated with living aboard as well as the sailing & navigational experiences one would expect. It was a great experience! Thanks for building on my sailing confidence... looking forward to the next one!
