Area Presented to Wind Vs Heel Angle

Why does sail area presented to wind decrease as heel angle increases? Is it that "vertical" sail area presented to wind decreases with heel but total sail area presented to wind does not change?

Also how does heeling angle give the sails a foil shape?

Yes the wind is horizontal so it looks at the vertically presented sail area. As the boat heels the vertical distance to the top of the mast decreases as with the vertically presented sail area. Also see this blog on how heeling angle creates airfoil shape. http://www.nauticed.org/sailing-blog/how-does-heeling-angle-create-airfoil-shape/
