Level V Captain Rank Chief Sailing Instructor / Assessor

Rated 5/5 by 91 students
Landfall Sailing was founded in 2005 as part of the Seraph Group on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas and is one of only a handful of schools in the U.S hosting the assessments for the internationally recognized SLC certification required for power and sail by many EU nations. Many of us had our first boating experience on powerboats but became fascinated with sailing. Sailing offers a lifelong learning opportunity, is quiet and environmentally-friendly, technically challenging, not entirely fuel dependent therefore offers unlimited range, is cost effective and enables adventures associated with bareboat chartering in exciting destinations. We are not solely focused on issuing stickers or certifications without also assuring that our students develop documented, tangible, verified, practical skills recognized by major charter companies worldwide. We tailor your classes to your schedule and limit our classes to 2 students Contact us today at www.landfallsailing.com/contact/ for yo

Bruce is an outstanding instructor. I have learnt a lot with him. He is patient and very detailed. He has a lot of experience to share and a lot of tips that I will be able to apply on my boat. I am looking forward to sailing again with him somewhere in the Caribbean. Thank You! Thank you Bruce for everything!

Bruce at Landfall sailing was a real pleasure to work with and took the time to understand my skillset, experience and needs to work with me on a training session, and SLC evaluation. That made the difference, we spent time on my weaknesses, and I learned a lot, and had fun! That's the most important, even though it was two cold days, we made the best of it, and Bruce and I became fast friends! If you need someone to teach, and help you meet your goals, go to Landfall sailing. DL, Denver Colorado

I drove across three states to spend two days with Captain Schwaegel for a review day followed by my assessment day. This was after my spending over two months of evenings studying the NauticEd curriculum. The level of effort I put into it was equaled by the positive preparation and effort put forward by Captain Schwaegel. Ahead of our meeting, he made himself available and was reasonably prompt in his replies to my questions and organizing our meeting. I am deeply appreciative to him for his professional work helping me. Thank you!

As a retired educator I know a good teacher when I see one. Bruce is an excellent instructor, he is very knowledgeable and personable. Even though this is a retirement gig for Bruce, he takes his job seriously. He throughly explains and reviews the tasks for the day and then expects you to go out and perform. He is patient, clear in his expectations, direct and efficient. Even though this course is demanding he made it a fun and rewarding experience! I highly recommend Bruce and would love to sail with him again!

Bruce provides a vessel that is fully capable for boat handling instruction and sailing instruction as well as for doing the on-water SLC assessment. His boat is he extremely well maintained. Bruce has an easy going teaching style. He takes the time to get to know you and where you are with respect to your sailing skill development. He explains the skill or task you are about to learn or preform by providing the amount of detail you need to understand the task. Sometimes it is difficult as a teacher to know how much information the student needs to understand and perform a new skill. Bruce seemed to have a 6th sense for providing just the right amount of detail for me to be successful. I really appreciated that he explained how certain procedures work, i.e. how and why the boat responded to the helm and sail inputs. He also took the time to explain alternate procedures to accomplish the same task. Bruce was a real professional, always calm, clear with his instructions, and always wil

Thankfully my wife and I found Landfall Sailing and Bruce through the NauticEd website. Bruce was always the utmost professional and has excellent communications skills. From course selection discussion through scheduling and on water classes Bruce did an excellent job. The care and attention to detail that Bruce has shines through as an instructor and on the 2005 Hunter 33 that we trained on. I doubt there is a better condition H33 out there. We travelled from Kansas to complete two separate weekends of training and for us it was well worth the time and cost. Lake Travis and the marina gave us some great and unique opportunities to deal with fluctuating wind conditions and concerns. The Nautic Ed Rubrics that Bruce followed were good building blocks and foundation for us to now be able to go away and practice safely to build more experience. We highly recommend Bruce and Landfall Sailing and will be do more training with him in the future.
