I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan – I got a Sunfish when I was ten and have been in love with sailing ever since. At 12 I was ‘adopted’ by the crew of The Northern Light: the 1938 12 meter US14. I raced and cruised on the boat until I was 19; the high point each summer being the famous Chicago to Mackinac race. For six years I worked the waters of Alaska from Prince William Sound to the top of the Bearing Sea as a commercial fisherman. I chose to settle down in Portland, Or. and was very happily surprised to discover the amazing sailing on the Columbia! I joined ISC right away and began racing avidly and working and teaching at the club. Now I sail my 78 C&C Lancer 30 out of Portland – sharing the joy of flying along in almost daily 15-20+ mph summer winds with countless friends through the years. Teaching allows me the pleasure of sharing this amazing world of sailing with the many wonderful students who, like me, "have been called by the sea..."

Much more practice required before I skipper a boat! I would prefer less students on the boat during the onwater lessons, which would give more time to think about what I am trying to learn. I tended to forget any question I had with all the hubbub aboard.

Stephen taught a very effective class that scaled to the level of the students abilities. His class taught much more than just small skipper sailing -- he covered things like effective line management and boat care, common courtesy on the water, and much more. He was very thorough and patient with his class. I highly recommend him.

My wife Nora, and I truly enjoyed our first experience with NauticEd. We appreciate the online curriculum format with videos, animations and humor throughout the courses. Josh at Island Sailing was very friendly and helpful, listening to our training needs and hooking us up with Stephen Franklin our instructor for 5 days. Following several phone calls with Stephen regarding our needs, and goals Stephen customized a 5-day course focused on course competencies. One of Stephen’s greatest strengths as an instructor is his level of patience with new students. He never Flogs a student with a “Cat of Nine Tails” for accidently gybing. His other strengths include his depth of knowledge based on years of experience and focus on safety. Having been an instructor for 30+ years in emergency response, my teaching philosophy and Stephen’s are identical. Adult students learn by doing, although they can learn the theoretical through self-study and classroom, true retention of knowled

Was clearly very passionate about sailing and his enthusiasm was infectious. I had a great few days on the water and will be looking for opportunities to get out in the future now because of my time during the training.
