Level V Captain Rank Qualified Sailing Instructor / Assessor

Rated 4.84/5 by 11 students
Sail fast and efficiently, responsibly and safely. Even after four decades under sail, I'm always keen to pick up new knowledge - and happy to pass it on, to anyone who wants to learn. Kids, hop aboard, and adults, learn the tricks of the trade! Thinking ahead, being confident and competent is no contradiction to having loads of fun, either in a team or while single handing. Born and raised in Germany, I started sailing at the age of 13 on Dutch rivers. Later based in Berlin, I explored the Baltic, and cast off to Denmark, Finland and Russia. Since my moving to New York in 2006 as photographer and author, I crew and skipper regularly in races on the Long Island Sound, in New York Harbor, and out of Cape Ann, MA. Regular offshore trips on the Atlantic along the Eastern seaboard from Maine down to the Bahamas, and over to Bermuda. A Transatlantic is in planning. For 15 years I skippered a 30'' C&C sloop out of Larchmont, NY, and sailed every drop of water around Long Island.

Location

Hoboken Sailing Club / Shipyard Marina

I'll train you on one of our eight J/80s and a J/105 out of Hoboken Sailing Club from April through November. During the winter months I am available to travel and assist with skippering anywhere in North America and the Caribbean. I also can teach courses and assess your competency anywhere else if you provide an appropriate vessel. Just get in touch with me.
Notes: Learning to sail on the Hudson River and in New York Harbor brings Frank Sinatra to mind: "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere." The area is safe enough to learn from the very beginning, but offers also a challenge in currents and tides if you want to up your game. I also skipper, teach and assess anywhere else in the United States and the Caribbean, like our recent teaching week in the BVI on a Lagoon 4500 with a final SLC assessment.

Training and assessment

International License Training/Assessment

Notes: Learn on our eight 26 ft. J/80s in the "Introduction to Sailing" and "Qualified Crew" courses, and sail on our 35 ft. J/105 for our "Skipper Large Keelboat" and "Bareboat Charter Master / SLC" courses. SLC checkout can be performed on our beautiful 43'' Cherubini ketch Sappho.

We used our club's J/105 which wasn't in great shape at the end of the season. No fault of Janko's but to his credit he used it as a teaching and testing moment.

Janko was a top notch instructor. We could not have asked for a more interesting, motivational, encouraging and most of all FUN person to put us through our paces. I am hoping to be able to continue my sailing journey with Janko very soon. He really is a pleasure to spend time with, and passionately shares his impressive experience. 12/10!! Thank you!

This was a teach-in session prior to my SLC exam and Janko did an excellent job of briefing me on what to expect and notably sources of info (weather, tides, currents etc) for New York Harbour. Appreciated his knowledge, patience and energy.
