Here’s a great unsolicited email from a student below. Makes me all goosey that the incredible effort that we do is all worthwhile. Incredible to think that the CatNED maneuvering game made such an impression. Certainly we advocate gaining practical experience – but it does show you what a little theory study can do.

I wish to provide some feedback on my experience re your courses
I have never sailed before but wanted a really special holiday, I hired a 40 ft Catamaran as a bareboat charter around the Whitsundays, Queensland Australia and have just arrived back (19 Dec 2010). I have done a number of your courses and feel my feedback may be useful.
With the help of your courses I was able to fully know what I was doing, successfully navigate, Confidently sail and trim sail, directing others with no prior experience, and perform a perfect docking manoeuvre in an incredibly tight marina with a strong winds, The marina master was fully impressed when I performed a perfect by the book docking procedure, he was blown away when I told him This was the first time I had docked a Cat, I then told him I had learnt how to do it by playing an online game (CatNed). You course was invaluable, I recommended the course to the charter company who are looking into it as an aide for other hirees.
Please feel free to use any comments in any way.
The only thing I think would help more is a sail trim For Cats course with step by step photo’s/procedures

Here’s an exciting addition to the NauticEd Sailing Certification system. We’ve now added a Qualified Crew Member Rank which is super easy to gain with the right education and experience. This announcement follows right on the heals of releasing the Safety at Sea clinic allowing for the advanced graduation to the Rank of NauticEd Captain. We’re really pulling the stops out these days and developing what a 21st century Sailing Certification should really look like.

A typical Qualified Crew Member Sailing Certificate
Qualified Crew Member applies to all those who have not yet made it to the Skipper, Bareboat Charter Master or Captain Rank. Or if you own a boat, it can apply to all those people that sail on your boat and you wish they knew a little more.
The Qualified Crew Member Rank works similar to the other ranks in that the student must pass a NauticEd educational course and log experience in our FREE online logbook.
To become a Qualified Crew member, the student must pass either the Crew Member Course or the Skipper Course and, for level 1, log a minimum of 10 days on the water. Alternatively, the student can shortcut the 10 days by becoming Proficiency Verified through an accredited NauticEd Hands-On-School offering an on-the-water practical training class and logging just 4 days.
This exciting announcement means that the Qualified Crew Member Rank is with in realistic reach of anyone without compromising any educational and certification integrity. Following that, the step up to Skipper is again with in easy reach.
To move through the levels in the Qualified Crew Member Rank, just follow this below:
- Level I – 10 Qualifying Days or 4 qualifying days with Practical Proficiency Verification
- Level II – 25 Qualifying Days
- Level III – 50 Qualifying Days
- Level IV – 100 Qualifying Days
- Level V – 200 Qualifying Days
The Practical Proficiency Verification stamp works as simple as this:
- Take the NauticEd Qualified Crew or Skipper Course
- Visit an accredited NauticEd hands-on practical sailing school and request practical training to the Qualified Crew or Skipper rank.
- When the instructor deems you proficient, he or she will electronically stamp your Sailing Certification.
- Make sure you’ve logged at least 4 Qualifying Crew Member days and …
- Viola – you’re a certified NauticEd Qualified Crew Member and your online Sailing Certification is instantly upgraded.

Here’s an email from a student asking about qualifying experience and my answer follows. The topic is regarding what it takes to gain qualifying days to count towards your Skipper, Bareboat Charter Master and Captain Ranks.

Dear Colleagues,
~ 2 month ago I have opened my account with NauticEd and trying to update my sailing experience regularly.
However, I face two problems:
1) initially I coul update it through my iPhone. Currently iPhone application seems to connect to the system, but does not provide any updates, such as addition of days for sailing experience.
2)I still can update my practical experience in the section “Update your current Experience”. However, there is no reflection of my experience in the “Your Total Qualifying Level Advancement </faq_sailing_certification> Experience is” section.
For example, I have earned 10 days of sailing in upper section, but lower section tell me I have 4 days of experince and need another 6 days to go from level 0 to level 1
I appreciate your help.
Thank you

Sorry the issue
The rules for qualifying experience are found listed in the FAQ Sailing Certification page and are:
- At least 50% of the days must be as Master of the vessel
- Vessels must be 20 ft (6.1m) or longer.
- At least 50% of experience must be on a vessel 28 ft (8.5m) or longer
- Must be on a sailboat
- Similar to the USCG standard, a day is considered a minimum of 4 hours underway in any calendar day.
So you’re gaining the 2 days experience on the 28 ft boat as listed and when more experience is added there – you’ll then be able to pick up the qualifying from the smaller boat. These qualifying rules were designed by the collection of thoughts from interviewing Charter Companies worldwide.
Also your iphone app won’t show the increased experience for the same reason – you need more bigger boat experience for the smaller boat experience to qualify.

Solution is to sail more (that’s a good thing)

PS in the back of of thoughts is to develop a small boat Ranking Level. Any thoughts from others out there?
